Radio newscaster - DJ , contractor, bridge builder, teacher, artist, surfer and fisherman, after a brave 9-year battle with cancer died August 31, 2017 in Klamath Falls, Oregon. He was 67. David, the son of a Marine and a teacher was the youngest of four children and spent his childhood between California and Hawaii. He was in high school when his dad got orders for Barber's Point. He sold the winning Angus steer he had raised as a 4-H member and, with his family, moved to Hawaii. Surfing with his brother Gary and friends, the ocean became his playground. But it was not all play. There was school to attend (Campbell High Class of '68) and in the summer he flung pineapples in Dole's field and, loving animals, worked with Dr. James Higa at his veterinary hospital. After high school graduation, he earned an FCC license in LA and moved to the Big Island, then back home to Oahu, broadcasting in both places. In a move to Oregon, his velvet voice could again be heard on the radio. The entrepreneur bug bit and he organized a cement finishing business in Klamath Falls. A bridge building concern lured him into a supervisory position and he became a bridge builder. After two falls, he retired from the danger and began teaching the art at the Northwest College of Construction. When the Rotary Club asked for his help, David's students, under his tutelage in three terms, embellished a spectacular fountain in Heritage Park in Scappoose, Oregon. During his fight with cancer, along with his teaching, he found peace sketching birds, fishing, and kayaking with his grandson and friend Ron. Nature loving, hard working, he was a caring husband, father, grandfather, brother and son. Everyone loved David. He had an awsome charisma, an unbelievable sense of humor and a smile that would warm your heart. Growing ponytails to be cut off and donated for a cancer kid's loss was only one example of his always caring for others. David's incredible kindness has touched many lives in different ways. David is survived by his wife Linda; his son Troy (Meghan); his daughter Maile and grandson Tavian; brothers Jim and Gary (Anita); sister Janet (Tom); and father, Lt. Colonel Thomas Kalus and mother, Dr. Janet Kalus. Braving a rain/snow downpour, on October 21, 2017, 80 people attended a "Celebration of Life" in Oregon and some of David's ashes were scattered, as he wished, in the river bordering his friend's ranch where he spent many happy years camping and fishing with family and friends. There will be a private service here, as he also wished, and more of David's ashes will be scattered from a catamaran near Diamond Head at 9:00 a.m. on December 9, 2017.
