He was born and raised in Honolulu, graduated from McKinley High School (1953), Missouri Valley College (1957), and received a professional teaching certificate from the University of Hawaii (1959). In 1960, he was hired by United Press International (UPI) in Honolulu as a general assignment reporter. Three years later, he transferred to the San Francisco UPI office where he worked as a sports writer, and then as the overnight editor, Pacific Division. In 1980, UPI promoted him to bureau chief in Honolulu. He resigned in 1988. In 1988, he was employed by the state of Hawaii Department of Business and Economic Development (DBED) as an economic development specialist, working to attract sports events to Hawaii. One of the successful projects was the Pete Newell Big Man Camp. In 1993, he joined the Associated Press (AP) in Honolulu. In 1994, he was appointed bureau chief and was responsible for AP operations in Hawaii and the Central Pacific. He retired in 2001. His sons, Kevin and Kyle, were the pride and joy of his life. He left a written message to them, hoping his life advice would help them live a good life. The following is part of the message. THINGS YOU GUYS SHOULD DO: -Don't bring shame to the family name. -Keep your word. When you say you're going to do something, DO IT PROMPTLY. -Finish what you start. -When you're finished, put things away. -Don't be judgmental of people. Respect their rights, even if they have different religious or political beliefs, etc. If someone violates your trust, remember that and treat them accordingly in the future. Gordon is survived by wife Jean; sons Kevin (Lori) and Kyle; grandsons Kolten and Keegan; sister Edith Hasegawa (Wallace); and brother Richard (Lanette). He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Tatsuko Sakamoto. A private "Celebration of Life" was held. Family requested no flowers or monetary gifts.
