GEORGE JYOJI ABEGeorge J. Abe, 101, of Kailua, passed away on December 19, 2017 at the Care Center of Honolulu. Born in Honolulu on May 5, 1916, he was named Gogogoro to mark the 5th day of the 5th month of the 5th Taisho year. At the age of four, his mother took him to Niigata, Japan, and left him in the care of her brother. After high school graduation in 1934, he returned to Hawaii and lived in Nuuanu. George took English- language classes and learned the bakery trade at various Oahu bakeries, including Holly, C&W, Lincoln, and Krispy Krust. In 1947, he worked at Holland House in Kailua, met and soon married Lynn (Sato), and changed his name to George. The two owned Jean's Bakery & Fountain (1950- 1971). He was known for his tiered wedding cakes, Danish pastries, and goodness as an employer. He was the first president of Kailua Japanese Civic Club. After retiring as a baker, George worked as a City & County groundskeeper. He loved shore fishing, Vegas, bowling, sumo, UH sports, and playing tennis (until age 97) with his Kailua Seniors Tennis Club friends. He is survived by daughters Jean Sumimoto, Gloria Chapman, and Carol Abe; and grandchildren Mark Sumimoto, Rick Sumimoto, Ann Walsh, and Kelsey Yama- guchi. He was predeceased by wife Lynn and son Clinton. The family thanks the doctors, nurses, and caregivers who cared for George in his later years. Visitation from 10:30; service at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 18. Burial at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 20, 2018. All at Hawaiian Memorial Park Mortuary.

JAMES 82, of Kaneohe, slipped away peacefully on January 5, 2018 with family at his side. He was a graduate of Kaimuki High School, c/o 1953 and retired as a Battalion Chief with the Honolulu Fire Dept. after 29 years of service. Jim was also a Facilitator for PSI men's classes. He is survived by his wife of 63 years Irene; sons John (Nora) and Mark (Johnen); daughter Bernadine Kaluhiwa (Roland). Jim also has 9 grandchildren: Samantha, Kekoa, James Taylor, Keawe, Anela, Malie, Pomai, Paulina and Kristina; 13 great-grand- children and 1 great-great-grand- child. "Sonny Boy" is also survived by brother Sanford (Donna Jean) and sister Margaret Kini and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Paul Andrew Allard, 93, of Honolulu, Hawaii, passed away on Monday, January 8, 2018, at the Kaiser Permanente Moanalua Medical Center. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 am, Tuesday, January 23 at Borthwick Mortuary, 1330 Maunakea St, Honolulu, Hawaii 96817. Inurement will take place at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (Punchbowl) in Honolulu. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the charity of your choice. Paul was born March 2, 1924, in Sioux City, Iowa to Michael and Emma (Ray) Allard. During WWII, he served in the North African and the European theaters as a member of the U. S. Army Air Corp. After the war, he attended the University of Southern California earning a degree in Engineering. For most of his adult career, he worked for the U. S. Navy in Civil, Industrial, and Maintenance Engineering. Following his retirement, he worked for various construction firms throughout the Pacific. Paul was preceded in death by his first wife, Jane Marie Binford, and their daughter Susan Ray Tanabe. He is survived by his two sons, Terry Michael Allard and his wife Beverly and David Brian Allard and his wife Cindy. He is also survived by his second wife, Rosemarie Protacio, and her children, Rosa Say and her husband Kerwin, Jay Protacio and his wife Deborah, Curtis Protacio and his wife Linda, Jeffrey Protacio and his wife Renee, and Becky Lake and her husband Bob. Grand- children from his first marriage are Kyle, Grant, Devin, Brian, Kathryn, Briana, and Stephanie, plus seven great grandsons, one great-granddaughter, and one great-great-grandson. He also grandfathered Rosemarie's grandchildren: Amber, Danny, Kristi, Michelle, Zach, Ashley, Justin, Brooke, Samantha, Jessica, Jayna, plus three great grand- sons and 5 great-granddaughters.
