Mildred “Millie” (Tokunaga) Kagehiro

On October 7th, Millie was relieved from a long and hard fought battle with Alzheimer's. She was born in Honolulu and worked at First Hawaiian Bank her entire career while raising 5 daughters. Millie met and married Walter Kagehiro at age 65 and enjoyed many years of traveling the world. She doted on her grandchildren in her retirement years until her disease required skilled nursing care which she received at 15 Craigside HCC and Hospice Hawaii by wonderful caregivers. Millie is survived by husband Walter, daughters Diane Koizumi (Richard Goh), Pam Arashiro (Pinky), Kathy Castillo (Rodney Harano), Nadine Uratsuka (Stan), Jessie Ito (Russ), 11 grandchildren and sister Connie Kim. With heavy hearts, we announce that our dear father, Hubert Joseph Kanaha, passed away on November 30, 2017, at the age of 89. He was born on April 10, 1928, the youngest and last surviving offspring of John and Mary Kanaha. He married our mom, the former Betty Tugaeff, his childhood sweetheart, on January 17, 1948 and together they raised 4 children. After his service in the Army, dad worked and retired as a longshoreman / linesman for McCabe, Hamilton and Renny. He also served as a ILWU Business agent. Dad was preceded in death by his beloved wife. Survived by sons, Dennis (Naomi), Gene (Oriette), John (Lana), and daughter, Patty; 7 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. The family will receive friends on Sunday, January 14, 2018 at Diamond Head Mortuary from 9:00 a.m.; Services 10:00 a.m.. Private inurnment on Monday, January 15 at 12:30 p.m..

BERTHA BICENTA LEINAALA CHING KAWAKAMIBertha, a longtime educator and former state representative, died on November 30, 2017. She was born and raised in Honolulu as one of seven children to Nancy Makia and Joseph Ching. A graduate of the Kamehameha School for Girls in 1949, Bertha attended the University of Hawaii at Manoa where she obtained her B.A. in education, followed by an M.A. in education from New York University. While at UH Manoa, Bertha was a flight attendant for Hawaiian Airlines. After college, she joined the Department of Education as a teacher, first at Nanaikapono Elementary, then Pearl Harbor Elementary, followed by a move to Kauai to teach at Eleele School. She would later become a principal at both Kekaha and Eleele Schools before joining the DOE Kauai District Office as an educational specialist and then deputy district superintendent. Unfortunately in 1987, her husband, Richard A. Kawakami, a longtime businessman and state representative for West Kauai and Niihau, died only a couple of months after becoming Speaker of the State House of Representatives. Bertha was appointed by then-Governor John Waihee to fill her late husband's seat, where she would serve the people of Kauai and Niihau until her retirement in 2006. Bertha was born on July 28, 1931 in Honolulu and is preceded in death by her husband as well as son Kendall Kawakami (1998). She is survived by son Wendall (Elizabeth) Kawakami and granddaughter Keilyn of Spokane, Washington, daughter Lyndall Kawakami of Honolulu, sisters Priscilla Wong and Deborah Chu, and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be at 10:00 am on Saturday, January 13, 2018 at Diamond Head Mortuary. Services will begin at 11:30 am with reception to follow.

Glenn Yoshio 62, passed away in his home in Elverta California on November 26, 2017, after courageously battling cancer for several years. Glen is survived by his wife Laura Santana of Sacramento, father and mother John & Mae Tsutsumi of Honolulu, father Ken & (Lois) Matsumoto of Canada, younger sister Debbie Kam (husband Darryl) & younger brother Kirk Matsumoto (wife Jan) & Todd Matsumoto (Canada). FRANCES JENKINS PICKENSFrances Jenkins Pickens passed away on November 4, 2017 at the age of 90. An accomplished artist, teacher, and lifelong supporter of education and fundraising, Frances established the Frances M.J. & Alexander Pickens Scholarship Fund in Secondary Education with her late husband, Dr. Alexander L. Pickens, University of Hawai'i at Manoa College of Education (COE) Professor Emeritus. Born in Dodd City, Texas, Frances earned both her bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of North Texas and a Master of Education degree from the COE. She taught art in public schools throughout the U.S. mainland, including Texas, Georgia, Michigan, and New York before coming to Hawaii where she taught art at Punahou School, then Kamehameha Schools (1965-1985). Featured in the Smithsonian American Art Museum (SAAM), Frances is cited as an important American metalwork artist, known particularly for her jewelry. She was named Distinguished Artist of Hawai`i by the Honolulu Academy of Arts in 1991. Her works have been displayed in shows at the Museum of Contemporary Crafts, New York; Schmuckmuseum, Germany; Renwick Gallery, Washington; Hawaii Craftsmen; and East-West Center Gallery among many others. A Celebration of Life will be held at the home of Frances and Alex Pickens on January 19, 2018 from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm. GEORGE KANAKALEILEHUA PULAWAIt is with heavy hearts that we must announce the passing of George Kanakaleilehua Pulawa on December 19, 2017 at Queen's Medical Center, at the young age of 60. He was born in Honolulu and was raised by his grandmother, Hazel Catherine Houghtailing Stone. Growing up he was an alter boy at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in Pearl City and had his own newspaper route, both of which made him a more independant and disciplined person. George was a hard worker no matter what the job was, from construction work to detailing vehicles to yard work. He also worked at XTreme Parasail as a tour driver for over fifteen years, working with people from all walks of life. He did it all. Making popsicles at his sister's factory made his day! He was a big 49er's Fan and loved playing chess. He had a big heart and was a loving, kind and caring individual. He was very loved and will be missed terribly. He is survived by his wife Florine M. Pulawa, sons; George Jr., Benjamin, Keli`i, and Keoki; step-daughter Chanel Carvalho; brothers; Benjamin M. Pulawa III and Virgil Hackney Jr.; sisters; Frances Ann K. Pulawa Stone-Cabael, Donna Rae K. Pulawa and Barbara Ann Prim; 12 grandchildren. Services for George will be held on Sunday, January 14, 2018.
