WILMA HEALANI HOLI (“AUNTY WILMA”)

WILMA HEALANI HOLI (AUNTY WILMA) Of Hanapepe, Kauai passed away on January 16, 2018. Aunty Wilma was a retired Secondary Teacher and Librarian for 39 years. She received a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education with emphasis in Health and Physical Education from Church College (BYU Hawaii), earned a Masters Degree in Education from Pepperdine University in 1979. In 1996, she received a second masters degree in Library and Information Sciences at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and managed to get her real estate license in 1985. Aunty Wilma was very active in her community prior to retirement. She is one of the founding directors of the Garden Island Canoe Racing Association, also served as Secretary and Race Director. Was elected President of the Hanapepe Community Association and served until Hurricane Iniki came. Coordinated recovery efforts with the community and the military. Recruited to be a board member and opened a chapter of Habitat for Humanity. Recruited for Ho'ola Lahui Hawaii, a Native Hawaiian health organization addressing the health needs of Native Hawaiians. During her tenure as President, she opened two community health centers and "340B pharmacies" which provided discounted medication for those in need (statewide), and served on the Papa Ola Lokahi (POL) Board until 2006. Last position as President succeeding the late Agnes Cope, who succeeded the late Myron "Pinky" Thompson. As a member of POL, she travelled to Washington DC to consult with Congressional members and key health officials. Aunty Wima lobbied for the College of Pharmacy at UH-Hilo which was a concerted effort that included others from Hawaii that brought this to fruition. She was apart of the Protect Kahoolawe Ohana (PKO), Kauai/Niihau Burial Council and one of her last efforts was her role as a witness in Protecting Mauna Kea hearings. In Aunty Wilma's professional life, there were a myriad of responsibilities that teachers as a whole take on, she coordinated the effort to compile and write the accreditation report for Waimea High School twice. President of a nonprofit organization that holds a 501(c)(3), her primary focus was to address health, education, and community needs. She was so proud of the students she worked with in getting them admitted to college, and provide academic, social & financial support. Aunty Wilma is preceded in death by: Solomon Hanohano Holi (father), Olga Kali Holi (mother), and brothers Lorrin, Nolan, & Gaylord; survived by her Sisters: Gwendolyn Holi, Belle Ka'iwi, Mona Joy Holi and Henrietta Holi Helm (Zachary Helm); Nieces and nephews: Denise, Janice, Kailianu, Barbara, Bruce, Benetta, Benehakaka, Tiare, Johanna, Douglas, Carlton, Curtis and Raiatea and God son Kapono. Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, February 10th at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 4580 Ehiku Street, Lihu'e Ph 808-245-3063; Casual attire. January 6, 1963 - January 21, 2018 Age 55, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 21, 2018 in Midland, TX. Maile was born on January 6, 1963 in Honolulu, Hawaii to Raymond Michael Scanlan, Sr. and Annette Healani Won Scanlan. Maile is survived by her husband Gary; daughters Laura H. Edmunds Ka'akua (Joshua) and Genevieve M. Gascon; sons Sean Michael H. Valdriz and Gary M. Gascon, Jr.; four grandchildren, Pono Ka'akua, Melia Ka'akua, Ezekiel Gascon and Elijah Gascon; one brother, Raymond M. Scanlan, Jr., two sisters Malia V.A. Scanlan, and Genevieve M. Teixeira (Tom). Family is handling private services at a later date. ELSIE SHEU CHAN KANANAElsie S. C. Kanana, 103, of Honolulu, died on December 28, 2017 in Honolulu. She was born in Honolulu on October 23, 1914. After she left school, she worked in the McKinley High School and St. Francis Convent cafeteria. She also worked at Libby Cannery as a forelady for 13 summers. In 1942 she went to work at Pearl Harbor Shipyard and retired in 1969 after 27 years of service. She was never one to be idle, so from 1975 through 1981 she worked in many school cafeterias, first as a cafeteria worker and then teaching an Occupational Skills Training Program for cafeteria workers. She then moved to Moorpark, California, for a short time. She missed her family in Honolulu, so returned and went to work for both Kmart & WalMart, where she was a greeter until age 89. She is survived by Alvin K. Awo (Barbara); Carol Pualani Bunch (David O'Donnel); and Carol Wright - (DECEASED); Grand- mother of eight; great-grand- mother of twenty; great- great- grandmother of ten; great- great-great-grandmother of two and numerous nieces and nephews. Services Tuesday, 1/30/2018, at Diamond Head Mortuary. Visitation 9:00 - 10:00 a.m.; Catholic Prayer service: 10:00 a.m. with burial to follow at Diamond Head Memorial Park at 12:30 p.m. Aloha attire. Andrew William Miller Jr. Passed away Wednesday August 30th, aged 72 at his home in Wilsonville, Oregon. Andy was born Honolulu November 22nd 1944. He grew up Kapahulu graduated from Kaimuki High 1963. He worked GTE Hawaiian Tel 35 yrs. Andy loved the ocean. He paddled for Waikiki Surf Club and was a member of the 1969 team that won the Molokai Hoe. He was a great athlete, competitor and leader, beloved father and husband. His ashes will be spread in a private memorial in Honolulu at a future date. Preceded in death by Father Andrew Sr., Mother Madeline, Sister Gwendolyn. Survived by wife Yvonne, sons Matthew and Christian (Paula). Grandkids Jude, Clara and Madeline. Nieces Denine, Sue Anne and Kathy. Cousin Antonio Munoz Jr.

Martha MiyakeMartha Miyake 92, of Honolulu passed away peacefully on January 18, 2018 at the Hawaii Kai Retirement Center surrounded by her family. Martha was born on December 25, 1924 in Honolulu. She was a retired special education teacher who helped hearing- challenged children. She taught at Diamond Head School for the Deaf and Blind and at Kahala Elementary School. She was the daughter of Matsuyo and Kashin Nitta and one of seven children. She is survived by her son, Garrett (Susan), daughter Christine Jones (Kenji), granddaughter Jessica (Kaika), and great-granddaughter Kehaulani.
