FAMILY PLACED OBITUARY

Sara “Anne” Van Culin
Sara 1938 - 2017 Anne Van Culin, 79, of Honolulu, Hawai`i, and a recent resident of Olathe, Kansas, passed away October 18, 2017. Born June 23, 1938, to Otto and Anne (Deverill) Ludewig, Anne enjoyed her childhood with brothers Richard ("Dick") and Kent. Following graduation from Punahou School (Class of 1956), Anne headed to Colorado to study early education at Colorado A&M (now Colorado State University) and the University of Denver from which she graduated in 1960. Shortly after her graduation, Anne married Mr. Tom Van Culin of Honolulu, Hawaii with whom she enjoyed two grateful children, Tori (Van Culin) Koch of Olathe, Kansas, and Drew Van Culin of Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan. Professionally, Anne undertook an early career teaching pre-school and kindergarten before embarking on a long career in real estate, originally in residential property sales and later in residential property management. In her retirement, Anne returned to her first love - teaching young children as a pre-school and kindergarten teacher. Over the course of her marriage and professional life, Anne made homes and countless friends throughout the country. From childhood friends in Hawai`i to college friends in Denver, to those she made throughout her professional and adult life in Bakersfield (CA), Minneapolis (MN), Honolulu (Hawai`i), Las Vegas (NV), and Olathe (KS), Anne filled her life with fond memories and even better friendships which she maintained throughout her life. Personally, Anne loved to travel and explore, and was fortunate to travel throughout the United States and well beyond. With sadness, Anne died still longing to see Alaska. Anne was also a film enthusiast. Always eager to see the latest release, Anne would easily - and gladly! - spend the day at the movies enjoying a double- (or triple-) feature whenever possible. And yet, Anne's greatest love and commitment was always for her family. A devoted mother, Anne was both a committed business woman outside of the home and the principle caregiver within it. Hustling from work to gymnastics with Tori, or to baseball with Drew, while preparing dinners and seeing to homework and laundry, Anne managed to do it all pleasantly and, even more, with good humor and a laugh. Anne, "Mom" to Tori and Drew, was a remarkable and dedicate mother for whom we are, and ever will be, immensely grateful. Anne's great love for her children was only surpassed by her immense love for her grandchildren, Isaac Koch, and Sam and Catherine Van Culin. She cherished being with them, cooking them dinner, baking cookies or brownies together, or simply goofing around. Even as mobility challenges limited her ability to get around, she found great joy simply by being in their presence and watching them grow and mature. Preceded in death by her brother Kent Ludewig and her (calabash) sister Sue Ludewig, Anne is survived by her daughter, Tori (Van Culin) Koch and her husband Randy; son, Drew Van Culin and his wife Jessica; grandchildren, Isaac Koch, Samuel Van Culin and Catherine Van Culin; her brother Dick and her nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at Saint Clement's Episcopal Church, Honolulu, Hawai`i on Wednesday, February 7 at 11am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that gifts in memory of Anne be directed to Punahou School at 1601 Punahou Street, Attention Advancement Office, Honolulu, HI 96822. Please note on the check that your gift is in memory of "Anne Van Culin '56."

Our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased
