James Yoshimitsu Makio, 85, of Kailua, Oahu, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 13, 2018, at his residence. Born February 18, 1932, in Honolulu, Oahu, he was the son of the late Yoshinobu and Victoria Kahaloa Makio. He attended Pahoa High School, and then moved to Oahu, where he graduated from Honolulu Community College and later worked as an electrician. He married his love, Evelyn Chong, and lived together in Kailua. He had a passion for running which led him to complete the Honolulu Marathon in 1978. He was also an avid golfer and made a "hole in one" at the Ala Wai golf course. He retired after 40 years as an electrical superintendent for AA Electric Ltd in Honolulu. After he retired he was involved in the 1186 Electrical Union as president. His hobbies include golfing, traveling, growing orchid plants in his greenhouse, and landscaping his yard. He loved to work with his hands doing carpentry such as making curly koa ukuleles, and renovating and extending his existing residence. James will forever be remembered for his dependability, intelligence, humor, and for being a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. He was the strong foundation of our family and will be dearly missed. We will always carry his memory in our hearts. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Evelyn Makio; daughter, Kathleen (Maihi) Peterson; son, Brian (Cindy) Makio; daughter, Susan (Wally Waldroupe) Makio; son, Steven Makio; and 3 grandchildren, Kuuipo (Kirk) Shelton, Micah and Kalene Peterson. He is also survived by his brother, Roy (Bea) Makio and by his sister, Joan Soares. A celebration of Life will be held in his memory on Tuesday, March 13, 2018, at St. John Vianney Parish, 920 Keolu Drive, Kailua, Oahu. Visitation will be at 10:00 a.m. and service at 11:00 a.m., followed by the interment at Hawaiian Memorial Park Cemetery in Kaneohe. Arrangements Provided By: Hawaiian Memorial Park Mortuary
