Gretchen Kelahunakiani Nott GOULD

Posted On March 18th, 2018 -

Gretchen Kelahunakiani Nott GOULDGretchen passed away peacefully February 17th, 2018 in Bellevue, Washington, surrounded by her 3 children, at the age of 91. Born in Honolulu, Territory of Hawai'i on December 27, 1926, she was the second child of Frederick Dickson Nott and Anna Cate Adams, and great-granddaughter of her Hawaiian ancestor Caroline Ninihua Wright. Devoted mother of Kim Gould (Michelle) of Seattle, Washington; Rick Gould (Cindy) of Poulsbo, Washington; and Alice Gould Hanscam (Mike) of Anchorage, Alaska. Proud Grandmom of Sarah, Tiriel, and Marika Gould, and Emily and Becky Hanscam. Gretchen was preceded in death by her loving husband Carl, brother Fred and half-brother Carter. Gretchen attended Punahou School (Honolulu), Lincoln High (Portland), graduating from Saint Nicholas (Seattle) in 1945. She earned a BA in Child Study at Vassar College, class of 1949. Growing up in Honolulu until age 14 meant rarely wearing shoes, avidly seeking out autographs from actors and actresses who vacationed in Hawaii, playing with Shirley Temple on Waikiki Beach, attending Camp Halekipa, and practicing double-dutch jump-rope whenever possible. Sailing on the SS Lurline December 5th, 1941, the family escaped Pearl Harbor, relocating to the Pacific Northwest. Airplane spotting during the war gave her a life-long love of planes. She worked as a governess in Florida, and met and married Carl Frelinghuysen Gould, Jr. in Seattle, Washington in 1950. She and Carl surprised their parents and friends in 1952 by leaving on a 16-month-long bicycle-freighter-train trip around the world. Gretchen enjoyed acting for the Junior Theatre of Seattle, planning summer family trips, throwing amazing kids' birthday parties, teaching the Hula, recording genealogy, remembering and sharing many family stories and history, and playing with, teaching, and loving many children in her life most especially each of her cherished grandchildren. Always proud of her Hawaiian heritage, she stood up against discrimination and unfairness wherever she encountered it. A long-time supporter of wildlife rescue, animal welfare, public schools, and a civic activist, she lived with conviction for what she felt was right and good for all. Gretchen, as with her deceased husband Carl, will be remembered for her quiet support that impacted so many in meaningful ways. Her wonderful spirit, energy, curiosity, joy, love for children, nature, animals and adventures will live on through her family and all those who were touched by her life. She passed peacefully while still giving and receiving joy in life. A special thank you to the staff at Aegis whose compassionate care helped make Gretchen's final years filled with joy, love, song, and laughter. A Celebration of Gretchen's Life will be held at the Sunset Club, 1021 University St, Seattle, WA, on Sunday, April 22nd at 2:00 pm. Valet parking provided. Remembrances to: Daughters of Hawai'i, 2913 Pali Highway, Honolulu, HI, 96817; Hawaiian Mission Children's Society, 553 S. King Street, Honolulu, HI, 96813; The Nature Conservancy, 74 Wall Street, Seattle, WA, 98121; PAWS, P.O. Box 1037, Lynnwood, WA, 98046.
