Michael John Cooper
Dr. Michael Cooper, 87 passed away peacefully on March 31, 2018, in Honolulu. Born in London, he was awarded a doctorate by the University of Oxford for his thesis on Joao Rodrigues, a jesuit missionary who worked in Japan and China from 1577 to 1633. The author of numerous books and articles about early Europeans in Japan. He was also from 1997 to 1998 the editor of Monumenta Nipponica, a widely respected English-language, peer-reviewed journal of premodern and modern Japanese studies, published by Sophia University (Tokyo). In honor of his outstanding scholarship, he was made a member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) and also recieved the Ordem de Merito from the Portuguese government. In 1999 Dr. Cooper retired to Hawaii. He is survived by his sister, Barbara Cooper, in England, and Honolulu by his life time partner, Ms. Toyoko McGovern.
