Archie Kaimi Ahuna

Posted On June 17th, 2018 -

Archie K. Ahuna passed away at the age of 65 surrounded by loved ones on May 23, 2018. He was born in Honolulu on May 24, 1952. The son of Joseph Ahuna II and Maude Waikiki Ahuna, he was a proud member of IATSE Local 665 for 40 years even serving as its president for 2 terms. Archie began his career in the film industry as an electrician under his father Joe Ahuna II on the original Hawaii Five-0. He then worked under Jack Fraggard on the original Magnum PI where he started his Special Effects career. He worked as the Special Effects Coordinator for many shows filmed in Hawaii including Jurassic Park, Windtalkers, Tears of the Sun, and Waterworld just to name a few. He began his own school to teach the special effects trade and later opened Ahuna's Special Effects Services in 1984. He had a close working relationship with the Honolulu Police Department, the Honolulu Fire Department, Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives Agency, The Film Commission, The City of Honolulu as well as donating his time and equipment to various agencies such as the March of Dimes Haunted House and educational programs that were interested in or needed assistance with Special Effects. He, along with his special effects crew, was rewarded for their hard work by winning an Emmy Award for the work done on the television series Lost. Archie made it full circle by working for both the current Hawaii Five-0 and Magnum PI. Dad was truly a Jack of all trades and master of all. He had a creative mind that allowed him to excel in the job he loved most, Special Effects. He was a great leader and mentor, known as Chief by those who worked under him. A true entrepreneur who worked hard to build his business and gain the respect of many in the film industry. He was someone you could always count on and believed in giving everyone a second chance. He shared his success and passion for special effects with anyone who wanted to learn. He was the core of the Family. With lots of love, compassion and patience, he took care of us and provided a sense of security and calm at home. Dad's other passions were singing, writing music, playing the guitar and sharing stories. After a long day at work, you would often find him in the garage with a beer in one hand and a microphone in the other. We will deeply miss his leadership, his strength, his guidance, his talents, his generosity, his loving spirit, his laughter, his passion for life and most of all, the love he gave us. "Dad we love you."Archie is loved and survived by his wife Fern N. Ahuna, children McLaine (Cindi) Ahuna, Nailima (Nina) Ahuna, Leah Ahuna and Patricia (Kyle) Davis and his 7 grandchildren: Dominic, Alonzo, Kaeden, Brenden, Tristen, Liam and Novali.
