Sister Agnes Vera  Hino. O.S.F.Sister Agnes Vera Hino, O.S.F, 95, a Sister of St. Francis of the Neumann Communities, went home to God at St. Francis Convent, on June 6, after a lengthy illness. She was the daughter of the late Gunsuke and Fusano Hino. A graduate of St. Francis Convent School, Sister entered the Sisters of St. Francis in 1949 and made her perpetual vows in 1954. She earned a Bachelor's degree at Marywood College, Scranton, Pennsylvania. She later studied to be a teacher of English as a Second Language (ESL). After a year in catechetical work, Sister devoted the next 25 years to teaching In elementary and secondary schools in Upstate New York, and Lorain, Ohio. Returning to Hawaii in 1980, Sister served briefly at St. Joseph Elementary School, Hilo, and then for 32 years at St. Francis School, Honolulu, until her retirement in 2013. Sister possessed a truly Franciscan heart, a devout spirituality which evolved from her Buddhist upbringing, a demure smile, and a penchant for organization and details. As an educator, she insisted that her students complete their lessons thoroughly and neatly, and she humbly credited the Holy Spirit for successfully guiding her students. During the final decade of her career, Sister taught ESL classes. She impressed others with her trivia knowledge and her wise insights into religious life. In community discussions, she would listen thoughtfully, then utter pearls of wisdom. She created her own Fashions by Hino on her many sewing machines. Sister Agnes Vera was predeceased by her parents and four brothers Noboru, Hisashi, Shigeru, and Packard Hino. She is survived by one brother, George (Kay) Hino, two sisters, Michie Moto and Stella Tamanaha, and 13 nieces and nephews. The Sisters of St. Francis of the Neumann Communities also survive her. Funeral services will be held on Friday morning, June 22, at St. Francis Convent, 2715 Pamoa Road in Manoa Valley: Visitation 8:30, Eulogy 9:45, Mass of Christian Burial 10:00, and inurnment at Diamond Head Memorial Park at 12:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sisters of St. Francis. Arrangements Provided By: Hawaiian Memorial Park Mortuary
