JOSHUA “JOSH” GUERRA

Posted On September 2nd, 2018 -

JOSHUA May 11,1976 - August 22, 2018 Josh, Hawaii Ocean Safety Officer, died in a surfing accident in Waikiki. He was born in Fresno, California to Randy Stevens Guerra and Frank Guerra. His family moved to Denver, Colorado and later to Leawood, Kansas where he attended Blue Valley North High School. In his senior year he was crowned Sweetheart King (his family teased him forever). He attended Texas Christian University where he majored in geology and history. Josh's passion for music flourished there. After graduating he spent summers counseling kids at Camp Wyonegonic, New Hampshire, working winters in Hawaii pursuing his love of the ocean and surfing. He eventually moved to Hawaii full time, joining his older brother Steve Chamberlain and chasing his dream to be a life-guard. Josh did qualify as a lifeguard for the City and County of Honolulu. He advanced to become a jet ski operator, working in hazardous ocean conditions where he and his colleagues saved many lives. His recent promotion to Lieutenant was a reflection of the respect earned during his 17 years of service. He was fondly called "The Goat" for his sometimes messy, curly, long hair, his fearless mountaineering skill and because he once ate a bagful of grass clippings to make his lifeguard friends laugh. He liked being "The Goat" and will be remembered by his Ocean Safety brothers and sisters that way. He continued to play as a drummer in many local bands. Josh loved his friends and family. He tried every day to live up to Hawaiian ideals. He was honored to be accepted into the community of his native Hawaiian peers, whom he respected deeply. He honored Hawaiian traditions and considered himself (over time and with great humility) a Hawaiian. He loved the energy he found in the ocean. He appreciated all things in nature. A seeker of knowledge, committed to personal growth, he became a yogi, a meditator and spiritual in his own understanding of that word. He was tender, lighthearted, compassionate, smart, determined, and hilariously funny even taking into account his horrible puns. He was a confidante to many (including his mom and brothers) who trusted his wisdom. He is deeply mourned by his parents, his brothers Sparkee Chamberlain and Nick Guerra, his grandmother Maria Stevens, Dayna Quigley and Macey Malacord. Service and Paddle-out, Tuesday, September 4 at noon, Kailua Beach Park.
