CLARENCE WING HOON LAM

Posted On October 24th, 2018 -

CLARENCE WING HOON LAMClarence Wing Hoon Lam passed away September 14, 2018, just 3 weeks from his 101st birthday. Born October 12, 1917 to Bow Lam and Choy Fong Lau of Honolulu, Clarence had an older brother, Harold, an older sister Janet, and 3 younger sisters, Bertha, Lorna, and Carol. They grew up in Honolulu as their father worked and retired from City Mill. The sisters remember him as being "rascal," but he must have been trusted. As a young boy his school sent him to town on the trolley to pick up and hand carry back the monthly payroll. He was not into sports, but taught himself to play piano and considered himself quite a "honky tonk" player. He raised chickens and was quite a carpenter building storage cabinets and shelves. While attending McKinley High School, Clarence met his sweetheart Ella Fong who was in the same class with his sister Lorna. After graduation, Clarence worked at Pearl Harbor as a draftsman for the US Navy. The USS Arizona Battleship was moored across from his office, and he saw the charred remains after the attack on Dec. 7th, 1941. They were married on September 23rd, 1945, three weeks after WWII ended. Clarence soon established Lam Brokerage Co., which represented food manufacturers in grocery stores - among them Cedergreen Frozen Peas, Bensdorp Dutch Cocoa, and A-1 Steak Sauce. He supplied local businesses with food colorings, flavorings and flour mix. He was an active Mason, Shriner, and member of Chinatown Benevolent Societies among them are Lum Sai Ho Tong, Lung Doo, On Tong, See Dai Doo, and proudly served as president in several. Clarence met acupuncturists from China who first came to Hawaii decades ago and helped them gain legal status in Hawaii. With what he had learned from these healers he developed expertise in acupressure massage for which he was famous. Among his notable patients were BYUH and UH athletes, professional athletes, entertainer Charro, and Benny Binion owner of Las Vegas Horseshoe Casino Hotel. Clarence is survived by First Son: Ronald (Juanita) of Honolulu, and their 3 children; Joanna (Devin) Anderson with 3 children; Nalani (Michael) Knickles; and Merrett (Meredith) Lam with 3 children. Second Son: Gerald (Dina) live in Kailua. Services are on Saturday, October 27, 2018, Diamond Head Mortuary Chapel. 10:30 am Viewing, 11:00 am Service, 2:00 pm Burial Service.
