Helen R. Howell

Posted On November 2nd, 2018 -

Helen R. HowellHelen Lee Rose Howell, age 100 of Franklin, VA left her earthly home on October 29, 2018. She is survived by her sons William H. Howell III (Jackie) of Franklin, John F. Howell (Wendy) of Honolulu, Hawaii, and daughter, Janet R. Howell of Mechanicsville; four grandchildren, Stewart Howell (Jackie), Susan H. Suiter (the late Ghi Suiter), Michael Howell (Tiffany), and Samantha Howell; five great-grandchildren, Robert and Jackson Howell, Emily and Madison Suiter, Hunter Howell; nine nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased in death by her husband of 70 years William H. Howell, Jr, and infant son, Carson Lee Howell; parents John C. Rose and Rosa C. Rose; brothers, William H. Rose, and John C. Rose, Jr.; sisters Sara R. Wright, Martha R. Kinney, and Doris Olivia Rose. "Mama Helen" was raised by her parents in the Carrsville community of Isle of Wight County. Upon graduation from Carrsville High School, she attended Fredericksburg State Teachers College (now Mary Washington University). She said that she didn't need four years, as she had learned all they could teach her in the one year that she attended. She was an active member of Franklin Baptist Church serving in numerous positions of the church, including being one of the first women to serve as a deacon. She served in a number of other capacities, such as leadership positions in the youth, Sunday school, circles, and WMU. She helped organize the first Home Demonstration Club in Southampton County. Helen was the sole founding survivor of the Wednesday Night Bridge Club which disbanded after 59 years of fun, fellowship and a little bit of card playing. She and her husband William were instrumental in the development of the Southampton Agricultural and Forestry Museum in Courtland, Virginia. Her love of flowers was a gift she inherited from her mother. She had a fondness for daffodils and planted them all over her yard and in the median in front of her home for all to enjoy. Her family members were known to beg and plead just to gets her rolls, pickles, yams and molasses cookies. Her cards (which almost always included a cartoon), letters, cookies, and phone calls will be missed. The family conversations around the dinner table at the beach, and at other special occasions, will never be the same. Her ability to remember every detail of every event was an amazing feat. The family is thankful to Vickie Hawkins, LaVern Barnes, Delores Eley, Kenasia Barnes, and Angelia Reid for their loving care of both Helen and William over the years. A service to celebrate Helen's life will be held at Franklin Baptist Church on Saturday, November 3rd at 2:00 PM. Visitation and a reception will immediately follow in the fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Franklin Baptist Church (208 N High Street, Franklin, VA 23851) or Southampton Agriculture Museum (Jim O'Berry, 724 Chaucer Ct, Franklin, VA 23851). www.wrightfuneralhome.org

JOHN ALBERT WALLACE

Posted On November 2nd, 2018 -

JOHN ALBERT WALLACETwo brothers were born on Oahu in the 1920's. One was cool, but one had a big heart. One was clever and became financially successful while one poured love and kindness into the lives of others. The family struggled through the depression and the brothers lost their father early in life. One got a full scholarship to private school and moved out while one remained at home near Diamond Head, caring for his mom until she died at 83. One fathered a family but left them, the other stepped into a family, promised forever and meant it. John Albert Wallace worked at Pearl Harbor for 40 years and never took even one sick day. On December 7th, 1941 he survived a horror filled Sunday and gave all he could to other survivors and those who didn't make it through. In his 50's, he met a woman who was attracted to him. She was the mother of two girls who would soon grow to love their new dad. When he married Sharon, he didn't know he would be her total care provider for the last 10 years of her life. John's friends at church helped him keep his promise to love through sickness and in health while health for the family, was in short supply. When John aged beyond his ability to live on his own, his daughter Karina devoted her life to care for him. No one ever took better care of anyone, anywhere. A graveside service will be held to honor John on Saturday, November 3, 2018 at Mililani Memorial Park Cemetery. Those who are missing John, his daughters Karina and Aina, nieces, Jami and Bobbi, his nephew Jay along with dear friends, remain behind to put into practice the legacy of love he demonstrated throughout his life.
