73John G. Chan, 71, of Hilo, a retired University of Hawaii at Hilo biology professor, died in Hilo Medical Center. He was born in Oakland, Calif. He is survived by wife Mary, son Jimmy, daughter Lisa Shurtleff, brothers Jeff and Jerome, sisters June Quan and Janet Lem, and a grandchild. Celebration of life: 5 p.m. Saturday at Dodo Mortuary, Hilo. Call after 4 p.m. Casual attire. In lieu of flowers or monetary offerings, donations suggested to the University of Hawaii Foundation for the Dr. John G. Chan Endowed Excellence Scholarship.
