JEAN SLEIGHT SHARPLESS

CHAPEL HILL - Jean Sleight Sharpless, age 89, widow of Richard K. Sharpless, died Wednesday, June 16, 2010 at Carol Woods Health Center.
Mrs. Sharpless was born in Los Angeles, California in 1921, and attended schools in California and Pennsylvania. Mr. and Mrs. Sharpless were married in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1948, and lived there until 1981, when they retired to Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Mr. Sharpless, a prominent attorney, died in 1997.
Mrs. Sharpless, while living in Honolulu, was a parishioner of St. Clement's Episcopal Church and the Church of Holy Nativity, a member of the Outrigger Canoe Club, the Uluniu Women's Swimming Club, the Honolulu Academy of Art, and was a founding member of the Legal Wives Auxiliary. She was Secretary-Librarian of the Hawaiian Historical Society from 1969 to 1972, and was a member of the Honolulu Board of Realtors. In the 1960s , Mrs. Sharpless was a member and officer of the State Central Committee of the Democratic Party of Hawaii. She enjoyed politics and was actively involved in campaigns for the presidency, the U.S. Senate, and the office of Mayor of the City & County of Honolulu. Mrs. Sharpless is listed in "Who's Who of American Women."
In Chapel Hill, Mrs. Sharpless was a parishioner of the Chapel of the Cross Episcopal Church and a member of the Davie Poplar Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Surviving are a son: Richard K. Sharpless Jr., his wife, Annette Louise Hughes, and their daughter, Jeannette Helen Sharpless, Mrs. Sharpless' only grandchild, all of Cranford, NJ; daughters: Kendall Deborah Sharpless of Volcano, Hawaii, and Lincoln Kennedy Sharpless and Robin Q. Evans of Provincetown, MA.
A memorial service will be held at the Carol Woods Retirement Center in the lobby of building 5, on Monday, June 21, 2010 at 11:30AM. Inurnment of the ashes will be in the family plot at Greenwood Memorial Park near Springdale, PA.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Chapel of the Cross, 304 E. Franklin St, Chapel Hill, NC 27514.
