Fay Gilkey Calkins Ala'ilima, 88, of Honolulu, an author, political scientist and educator, died at home. She was born in New York. She is survived by husband Lei'ataualesa Vaiao John; sons Birdsall and Charles; daughters Leuga Turner, Gladys Ala'ilima, Marie Ala'ilima-Lafaele, Fay Ala'ilima-Rose and Cecilia Ala'ilima-Gibson; sisters Harriet "Happy" Hunter and Gladys "Junie" Keidel; 22 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. Celebration of life: 2 p.m. Saturday at Wesley United Methodist Church, 1350 Hunakai St., Kahala. No flowers. Donations suggested to the Fay Ala'ilima Trust Fund for sustainable forest agro project in Samoa.
