ROBERT (BOB) JOSEPH SPECK
Robert "Bob" Joseph Speck, 81, died Sunday, November 28, at his home in Honolulu after a long, hard-fought battle with cancer. Born September 12, 1929, to Robert and Vivette (Cantlon) Speck, Bob was raised in Chicago and graduated from Mount Carmel High School and DePaul University. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in Japan. He later received a degree in Foreign Service from Georgetown University.
Bob married Setsuko Kawashiri in 1957, and they had four children. He worked for IBM from 1959 to 1991 and was involved in creating the national fingerprint registry for the federal government. Upon retirement, Bob participated in community activities and local politics. He assisted with several Republican political campaigns, was elected to the Hawaii Kai Neighborhood Board and was a long-time smokers' rights advocate.
Bob is survived by his wife Setsuko (Kawashiri); daughters, Susie Speck Mayor (Joe Fabrocini) of Reseda, CA; Margie Speck Ogawa (Patrick) of Mercer Island, WA; and sons Robert J Speck (Louise) of Wilmette, IL; and Bill Speck (Maria) of Honolulu; and eight grandchildren.
Visitation and viewing at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, December 9, Holy Trinity Church, 5919 Kalanianaole Hwy, Honolulu, followed by 12 noon funeral mass. Burial at 2 p.m., Hawaii State Veterans Cemetery, 45-349 Kamehameha Hwy, Kaneohe, HI. Aloha or casual attire. No flowers please.
