SUSUMU "TONTI" SAKAIDA
Susumu "Tonti" Sakaida, 86, retired Journey General Mechanic of CPC Del Monte Kualapuu, Molokai died February 7, 2011 at Pali Momi Hospital. He was born in Kaunakakai, Molokai. He was preceded by wife Yasuko and survived by sons Dane and Eric (Lauree), daughter Grace (Ian) McKnight, brothers Seichi (Sally) and Manabu (Louise) and 10 grandchildren. He served in the U.S. Army 442nd I Company in WWII then attended Midwest Trade School in Chicago. He was an ILWU officer, PAC chairman, on the Molokai Task Force and after retiring, served on the Maui County Planning Commission and the Aquatic, Wildlife & Forestry Board. He was an Eagle Scout and an Explorer Scout Master, serving 60 years and receiving the Silver Beaver Award. He coached Little League Baseball and Biddy Basketball. He was an avid fisherman and hunter and always said 'Molokai was the best place to live in the whole world'. Service will be held on Sunday, March 6 at Nuuanu Memorial Park at 3pm, visitation at 2pm. Inurnment will be at National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl Crater at a later day.
