Julie Hedemann Howard, 90, passed away March 7, 2011 in Spokane, Washington. Julie was born in Honolulu, Territory of Hawaii on July 28, 1920 . Julie married Lewis Warren Howard on January 24, 1941. They lived in Honolulu - Manoa and Nuuanu Valleys - for 28 years, then moved to Kula, Maui for the next 20 years. Julie and Lewis retired in 1989 and moved to Spokane, Washington which became their home for the next 22 years. Julie was predeceased by her mother Dorothy Hartwell Hedemann and father Frederick Ferdinand Hedemann. Julie's mother was the great-granddaughter of James Smith, a physician who went to the islands as a missionary in 1842. Julie's father was a physician and one of the founders of the Hawaii Medical Group.
She is also predeceased by her older brother Frederick Hedemann who died in 1996. She is survived by her husband of 70 years Lewis Howard, daughters Amy Howard of Spokane, Patricia Pizarro of Alberta, Canada, and her son Warren Howard of Vancouver, Washington. Julie will also be missed by her six grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life service was held at Harbor Crest Retirement Community on March 26th where Julie lived with her husband for past eight years. Arrangements for burial in the family plot at Oahu Cemetery in Honolulu are pending.
