IRENE HARROD COLLINS HEDEMANNIRENE HARROD COLLINS HEDEMANN
Irene Hedemann, 89, of Kaneohe, passed away peacefully at home April 17, 2011. Irene Harrod was born November 19, 1921 in Louisville, Kentucky, and grew up in Southern California. She attended undergraduate studies at the University of California at Berkeley (Cal) and graduated from the University of California at Los Angeles. She joined the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority in 1942 while at UCLA. Irene completed her post-graduate studies in physical therapy at Stanford University. Choosing which football team to root for when each alma mater played each other was always a fun challenge. She admitted, though, that she always had a soft spot for Cal. Irene moved to Hawai'i in 1946 after marrying George F. Collins (deceased). She was active in the Junior League of Honolulu while raising three children. After marrying F. Frederick Hedemann (deceased), she became active with the Garden Club of Honolulu. Irene was an avid tennis player until the age of 80, travelled extensively, and loved a good game of bridge, which she began playing in college and enjoyed throughout her lifetime.
She is survived by two sons: George Holbrook Collins and wife Madeleine (of McHenry, Maryland), Charles Harrod Collins and wife Paula (of Palo Alto, California); and daughter KC Collins (of Kaneohe); six grandchildren and one great grandchild.
A celebration of life is pending. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory are suggested for Windward United Church of Christ, 38 Kaneohe Bay Drive, Kaneohe, HI 96734.
Our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased
