FAMILY PLACED OBITUARY

DOLORES CHRISTINE MEDEIROS CARMODY
DOLORES CHRISTINE MEDEIROS CARMODY Age 74, of Kailua, HI passed away peacefully and surrounded by love in her beloved Lanikai home at sunset on April 17, 2011. Born May 9, 1936 in Barrington, Rhode Island she remained there until entering Newport Nursing College in Newport, Rhode Island in 1954. In 1957 she graduated with a Bachelors of Science degree in Nursing. While attending college an uncharacteristic decision to go on a blind date resulted in her discovery of her soulmate and one true love. It was truly love at first sight for both herself and a young naval officer named Cornelius "Neil" Carmody, and it was a love that would endure for more than 50 years. They became engaged, married and started their family. Neil's naval career took them up and down the East Coast and to Italy twice where the family continued to grow and Del became fluent in the language. It would always hold a special place in her heart and would be a favorite travel destination. Fifteen years, and five children, after they married the family was introduced to the beauty of Hawaii. It would become, and remain, their home. Throughout all the kids, moves and changes that life brought, Del maintained all certifications and training needed to keep her nursing credentials up to date. While her family was the number one priority, it had always been her intention to return to nursing. First as a volunteer at Tripler and then hired at Queens she restarted the career she had put on hold, eventually retiring from Queen's Same Day Surgery. Retirement brought Del and Neil the freedom and time to travel and travel they did. Multiple trips to Italy, Spain, Ireland and Portugal as well as trips to the East and West Coasts to visit family and friends. Although Del curtailed her travels after losing her beloved Neil in 2008, she stayed busy with swimming, Board duties, outings with her many friends and just being a mother and grandmother. She is pre-deceased by her husband Neil and youngest son Michael. She is survived by sons Cornelius 'Neil' II of Honolulu, David (wife Elaine) and grandsons Andrew and Evan of Kailua and daughters Catherine (husband Bill Snyder) of San Diego and Margaret 'Margo' of Kihei; brothers John and Lawrence (Carol), nieces and nephews. Services will be on May 9th at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church. Visitation 9am with Funeral Mass at 10am. Reception to follow at 1130 at Baci Bistro. Ashes will be interred privately at Punchbowl National Memorial Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to Hospice Hawaii are appreciated. Mahalo to the staff at Castle Hospital ICU and staff at Palolo Hospice House; your kindness and gentle care were greatly appreciated. Special thanks to Helene, Laura and Suzanne.

Our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased
