Frank "Tim" Olmsted Hay, a long time resident of the North Shore, died in his sleep at his home in Brentwood, California, on March 24, 2011 at the age of 95. He graduated from the University of Florida in 1939 and served 28 years in the US Air Force. As a C-47 pilot, he flew paratroopers in the invasions of North Africa and Sicily. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for heroism, landing a glider with paratroopers behind enemy lines to capture a strategic airfield in Burma. He retired from the Air Force as Commander, Wheeler Air Force Base, in 1967 and was an avid golfer at the Leilehua and Kalakaua Golf Clubs. He was long active in the Wahiawa/Waialua Rotary Club, the Waialua Community Association, and an honorary member of the Haleiwa Hawaiian Civic Club, as well as many other civic and community associations.
Tim was married for 56 years to Anne, mother of his three children, until her passing in 1996. He is survived by his wife Darlene, of Brentwood, California, to whom he was married for fourteen years, one son Frank, Junior, of Koke'e, Kaua'i, daughters Suzanne (Stuart) Hanchett, of Moloa'a, Kaua'i and Barbara (Alvin) Santos of Haleiwa, Oahu, four grandchildren, Keoa, Keana, Nainoa, Makana, and four great-grandchildren, Makali'i, Emma, Kilinoe and Ke'alohi.
Tim asked that memorial gifts be given in his name to the Rotary Youth Foundation, c/o Calvin Wakai, 130 Mango Street, Wahiawa, Oahu 96786.
A Celebration of His Life will be held at the Kawailoa Ranch Pavilion (old Meadow Gold Dairy outside Haleiwa) on Sunday, July 10 at 11:00 am. The family requests no flowers.
