HENRY M. SUMIDAHENRY M. SUMIDA
80, of Pearl City, died Sunday, Dec. 18, 2011. A graduate of W.R. Farrington HS ('49), he later attained degrees in engineering from the University of Hawaii and business administration from Pepperdine University. As a civil engineer for over 50 years, Henry worked with many firms, most recently with HDR, Inc. He served his country proudly in the US Air Force, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel from the USAF Reserve. Henry was actively involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Honolulu throughout his life and had the honor of serving as the first "Big Brother" in 1964 with the organization, then known as Big Brothers of Hawaii. Later in his life he was also a volunteer with St. Francis Hospice, a calling he followed after his wife Barbara Francis Sumida lived her final days in their compassionate care. He also followed Barbara's spiritual path and became a member of Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish. Henry is survived by his sons, John Sumida and Michael Sumida; daughter, Emiko Macaulay (Kirk); sister, Amy Bone; brother, Wilfred Sumida; grandchildren, Sean, Maya, and Leila Macaulay; sisters-in-law, Marinell Baker and Mariellen Francis; and brother-in-law John Francis (Charmaine). Mass: 9:30am January 4 at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church, 1525 Waimano Home Rd. Call after 8:30am. Graveside service: 11 a.m. January 5 at Hawaii State Veteran's Cemetery, Kaneohe.
