James Alviar Sr., also known a "Jim" and "Al," 78, of Aiea, a retired Marine Corps gunnery sergeant, a Women's Community Correctional Center corrections educational specialist and commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Fort Shafter Post 10276, died in Kailua. He was born in Waimea, Kauai. He is survived by wife Carol L.; sons Harlando Jr. and Daniel La Madrid, and James Alviar Jr.; daughters Jacy Campbell, Jodie Itchner and Jennifer Alviar; sisters Rose Alviar, Connie Travis and Juanita "Nita" Chandler; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Visitation: 8:30 a.m. Thursday at Mililani Mortuary-Waipio, mauka chapel. Services: 10 a.m. Committal services: 1 p.m. at National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Punchbowl. Casual attire. Flowers welcome.
