89, of Honolulu passed away on May 22, 2012 at his home. He was born in Dayton, Oregon on Nov. 8, 1922. He was raised in McMinnville, Oregon and entered University of Oregon in 1940. Rand enlisted in USMCR in 1942 and graduated from the first and only "Special Officers Candidate School" (SOCS) in Camp LeJeune, NC in 1944. He joined the 1st Marine Division in Russell Islands following the Peleliu operation and participated in the Okinawa operation and then operations in North China. With stints between civilian life, active duty/reserves and during the Korean War, he finished his service in 1952 as Captain USMCR.
Rand lived in Portland, Oregon from 1952-1960 and was employed in the group insurance field as a salesman. He then moved to Hawaii and entered the vehicle and equipment leasing business as co-owner and operator of Auto & Equipment Leasing of Hawaii with eventual expansion of the business to include California in 1964. He later entered the real estate development business in California with his son, J.B.
He served on various trade organizations and boards in Honolulu and held memberships in the Pacific Fleet Submarine Memorial Association (USS Bowfin Submarine Museum & Park), Oahu Country Club (Past President), Outrigger Canoe Club, Masonic Lodge, Honolulu Scottish Rites Bodies and Aloha Temple Shrine.
Rand is survived by his wife Eleanor (Ele) Potts, adult children J.B. (Mardi) Potts, Julie (Cooper) Camp, Norma (Gerald) Chan, Vicky (Jaime) Chai-Guerpo, Richard (Jane) Howard, grandchildren David, Scott, Brian, Steve, Alex, Zack, Liam, Keara, Cynthia, great-grandchildren Luca, Nolan, Mateo and dog Mari Awana Potts.
A celebration of Rand's life will be held privately at date to be determined. In lieu of flowers, family is requesting any donations be made to the Aloha Temple Shrine -Travel Fund (1611 Kewalo St., Suite 201, Honolulu, HI 96822) or the Kapi'olani Health Foundation - Capital Campaign (55 Merchant Street, Suite 2600, Honolulu, HI 96813).
