EVELYN WYATT HENDERSON
Of Honolulu, a retired teacher of Mathematics at Punahou, died June 12, 2012 at Hospice Hawaii's Kailua House.
Born in Washington, D.C. on August 18, 1916 to R. D. and Maude Wyatt, Evelyn was raised in Washington, D.C. and Loveland, Colorado. Educated as a teacher, she was also one of the earliest licensed female pilots in the nation. While completing her certification in aerobatics, she met her future husband and married him on Christmas Eve of 1941. After World War II, they lived in the Philippines for 18 months with their first two children. In 1949, on their return voyage to Washington D.C., they stopped briefly in Honolulu. Their voyage never continued, and except for a brief sojourn in the Midway Islands, they remained in Hawaii for the rest of their lives.
Evelyn loved to travel, circling the world twice, visiting every continent and making lifelong friends wherever she went. She lived life to the fullest, wasting not a moment of her nearly 96 years, and traveled to the mainland form a final visit with friends and family only weeks before her death.
Evelyn was predeceased by husband Hal D. Henderson and first child Muriel H. Frederick. She is survived by sons Hal and Robert, daughter Leilani, five grandchildren and one great grandson. She is also survived by sister Helen Wyatt Snapp and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 10 am on August 17, 2012 at the Elks Club in Waikiki. Donations can be made to the Church of the Holy Nativity, the Salvation Army, or Hospice Hawaii.
