Lionel John Pioiwa Kahele passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 13, 2012, at home with his loving wife, Loretta, at his bedside. Loretta cared for Lionel throughout his illness and his strong faith in God gave him the will to endure the pain he suffered. He was a very special person who will always be remembered as our "happy-go-lucky" friend, a very genuine and thoughtful person. Lionel was born on November 27, 1937, and was raised in Damon Tract, Honolulu. He graduated from Farrington High School and subsequently enlisted in the U.S. Army. Following his military service, Lionel eventually worked for the Honolulu Fire Department. He was a captain at the McCully Fire Station in Honolulu and retired after serving 28 years with HFD. He is survived by his wife, Loretta Waipiilani Lee Ing Kahele; daughters Patricia Ann Kahele Case and Veronica Ing Seto (Daniel); grandsons James and David Case; granddaughter Jannelise Ing Mateaki (William); and great-grandson Tyler Ing Mateaki. He is also survived by brothers: John, Charles, and Terry Liana; Douglas, Sam, Emerson, Shawn, and Wyatt Souza; sisters Merla Leong, Sharon Hea, and Winona Konohia. Visitation: Friday, January 4, 2013, from 9:00 a.m., services at 10:30 a.m. with Mass at 11:00 a.m., Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 5919 Kalanianaole Highway, Honolulu. Burial 12:45 p.m. at Diamond Head Memorial Park.
