ANNA SCOTT SLOGGETT
Born September 17, 1906 in Lihue, Kauai, Hawaii, passed away at home on January 2, 2013. Anna was a living legend, known for her irrepressible wit, and honored as a talented, dedicated and caring teacher. Her grandparents were William Hyde Rice and Mary Waterhouse Rice. She was born in Lihue to Walter H. and Mary Eleanor Rice Scott. Anna attended Kauai High School, class of 1924, Mills College, and graduated from San Francisco State College. She returned to Hawaii and taught at Kamehameha IV in Lahaina, Kawanakoa and Punahou Schools on Oahu, Lihue Grammar, Kapaa Grammar, and Elsie Wilcox Schools on Kauai. Anna taught for over 35 years. Her students remember her giving up lunch for those who had forgotten theirs and taking athletically challenged third graders by the hand to help them kick the ball and run bases in kick soft ball games. She had 8 year olds writing and producing plays. She was the first to take students on memorable excursions that enriched their lives, places such as the post office, fire station, police department, sugar and pineapple factories, Waipahe`e falls, and foreign ships berthed at Nawiliwili Harbor. She instilled a great love of reading in her students who were rewarded with special visits to her home. She never dwelled on what a student couldn't do, only on what a student could do. Anna has won awards in teaching, golf, and bridge. There is a plaque at the first tee at the Wailua Golf Course commemorating her 100th birthday. She played that day in the invitational golf tournament that honored her. Golf was her passion and she played until 2007. The Anna S. Sloggett Award was created by Women In Theater and awarded to an individual who has gone above and beyond supporting the arts on Kauai. In addition two endowed scholarships have been established in her name at the Kauai Community College: one for students in Early Childhood Education and the other for students in Elementary Education. In 2002 she was named one of Kauai's Living Treasures. In 2007 she gave the Spring Commencement Address at the Kauai Community College. She was actively involved in the community until she was 103. With all her accolades, what has made Anna Sloggett such an inspiration to her family and friends, young and old, has been her gift of friendship, her willing spirit to help others and her sense of humor. Throughout her 106 years, she stood up for the oppressed and was always there when someone need a shoulder to cry on. She was young in spirit, an inspiration, an icon who moved through the years with grace, enjoying life to the fullest. We will miss Anna mother, grandma, auntie, dear friend and mentor. Anna was preceded in death by husband, Richard H Sloggett, Sr, step-daughters, Nancy Slogett Goodale and Sally Sloggett De Harne. She is survived by daughter, Marion Scott Penhallow, son, David Penhallow Scott and step-son, Richard H. Sloggett, Jr. (Loree), as well as grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and numerous cousins, nephews and nieces.. A celebration of her life will be held Friday, January 18, 2013 , at 4:00 p.m. at the Lihue Cemetery. The family is especially grateful to Kauai Hospice, especially Julianna and Cheryll, for their loving support and to Mele Ulukau, a care giver without equal.
