JOSEPH F. SOUZA, JR. Feb. 12, 2013 Joseph F. Souza, Jr., 83, of Maui, a retired U.S. Army Sergeant First Class, died peacefully surrounded by family at his daughter's home. He was one of six children, born to Jose Souza, the first Fire Chief of Maui and Mary Souza (Castro) in Wailuku, Maui. Joseph attended St. Anthony's Catholic School and continued a lifelong devotion to His Roman Catholic faith. He went to work at an early age to help his family, then enlisted in the Army at 17 and became a paratrooper. He was a wartime veteran of WWII and Vietnam. He was also a combat veteran of the Korean Conflict, and Purple Heart recipient. He was also awarded the Soldier's Medal for (Heroism) for saving the life of a drowning swimmer at Sandy Beach, Oahu. He married Lorraine Souza (Camacho), Miss Waikiki, in 1951. One of his many hobbies was bodybuilding, earning him the title Mr. Armed Forces. He also loved spear fishing, shell collecting, Sculpturing, and wood carving. He is survived by wife Lorraine (Camacho) Souza, of Honolulu; nine sons and daughters, Charles (Tiare) Souza of Hilo, Mary (Greg) Gagne of Potomac Falls, Va., Starlette Bauer of San Diego, John (Suzanne) Souza of Hilo, Celeste R. Souza of Waikaloa, Mark Souza, Paul Souza, and James Souza, all of Honolulu, Carolyn (Steven) Conner of Gresham, Or. Sister Elsie Furtado of Wailuku, Maui, and brother Edward Souza of Makawao, Maui. He was preceded in death by brother Albert Souza, sister Elizabeth (Souza) Lake, and infant brother Joseph, all of Maui. He has 29 and three hanai grandchildren, 46 great- grandchildren, and four hanai and two great-great-grand- children, and many nieces and nephews. May the mercy of God, grant unto you eternal rest. We love you. Funeral services: Viewing 9:30 a.m. followed by Mass at 10 a.m. at Star of the Sea Church, Honolulu, and burial at 1 p.m. at Kaneohe Veterans Cemetery.
