BARBARA JEAN AYAKO KIRKERBARBARA JEAN AYAKO KIRKER COLUMBIA, SC Barbara Jean Ayako Kirker, nee Nelson, was born on May 7, 1939 in the then Territory of Hawaii. Her parents were Loren Milton Nelson and Nancy Shizuko Nelson, nee Matsumoto. Barbara grew up in Honolulu and was graduated from the Roosevelt High School there. Immediately thereafter she was tapped by an Hawaiian Dance troupe to go with them to New York City to dance there in the popular Hawaiian Room of the Lexington Hotel. Barbara was a Hula Dancer beginning at age 4 and danced in various semi-professional groups while growing up in Honolulu. This was her first professional contract and she became a lead dancer for her troupe at the Hawaiian Room.
