MARY ALICE GURLEY MANLEY
1-5-14 MARY ALICE GURLEY MANLEYMARY ALICE GURLEY MANLEY Of Honolulu and Kawela Bay, went home to be with the Lord peacefully, on Thursday, December 5, 2013, at home, surrounded by friends and family. She was born March 15, 1931 in Whittier, California, to Mildred England Gurley and John Addison Gurley II, 3rd generation California orange ranchers. She was also Grand-niece of a member of the cabinet of the court of King Kalakaua. The family moved to Newport Beach, in the early 1940s, where Mary pursued her sailing and tennis interests. She attended Newport Harbor High, graduating in 1948. Mary attended the University Of Colorado at Boulder where she met her future husband, Elmer E. K. Manley, of Wahiawa. Mary and Elmer were married in Corona del Mar, California, on July 29, 1951. Elmer was sent by the Air National Guard, to Wichita, Kansas. Upon leaving the Air National Guard, Mary and Elmer moved to Wahiawa, in 1952 and continued to live on Oahu for their 62 1/2 years together. Mary was an avid potter and an active volunteer as room mother, girl scout leader, and soccer mom. Her lilikoi jelly was loved by all. She continued her sailing hobby, occasionally sailing her Lido 14 from Kawela Bay to Haleiwa. Mary was an active member of Chi Omega Sorority and an honorary member of the Kamehameha Schools Class of 1948. Mary was well known in the travel industry in Honolulu, with a career as a travel agent and eventually purchased Bel Air Travel in 1980. She pursued her passion for travel, touring all over the world. She retired from Bel Air in 1994 and turned her attention to volunteer work, delivering "Meals on Wheels", and working for The Palace Shop at I'olani Palace for 17 years. In recent years, Mary and Elmer retired permanently to their home at Kawela Bay, where they enjoyed peaceful times and Mary's favorite, "Wheel of Fortune" TV show. In addition to Elmer, Mary is survived by her 4 children: daughter, Laura Manley Colandrea (Tom) of Honolulu; sons, Mark Manley (Nancy) of Kawela Bay; Addison Manley (Connie) of Eugene, Oregon; and Scott Manley (Jennifer) of Na'alehu, Hawai'i; Grandchildren, Jesse Colandrea (Jana) of Honolulu, Trevor Colandrea (Allison) of Boston, Massachusetts; Evan Manley and Lauren Manley of Bend, Oregon; Mark Bonner(Amanda) of California; Great-grand daughters, Chloe, Emma, and Ellis Colandrea. Family and friends are invited to join the family for Funeral Services/Celebration of Life to be held at Waiokeola Congregational Church on Friday, January 10, 2014 at 4:30 pm, and the memorial service and scattering of ashes to be held at the family home at Kawela Bay, Saturday, January 11, 2014 at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to Mary's favorites, "Meals on Wheels Hawaii" or "Friends of I'olani Palace".
