THEODORE HAUOLI "JOE" HACKBARTH
1-23 THEODORE HACKBARTHTHEODORE HAUOLI JOE HACKBARTH Beloved husband of Janice Pang Hackbarth passed away suddenly in New York on Nov. 6, 2013. Joe and Jan were traveling with dear friends Patti and Harry Woodd when he suffered a massive heart attack. He is survived by his wife Jan (formerly Janice Chang of Ewa), step children Robyn Pang Ponty (Michael) and Jason Keone Pang. Joe was the youngest of four children born to Albert and Lily Hackbarth of Kailua. He was preceded in death by his brother David Hewahewa and survived by brothers Fred (Frances) and Albert M. Hackbarth (Lauren Robbins), four grand children; nieces and nephews. Joe spent his childhood in Kailua and enjoyed sports. Joe played football and graduated from Kailua High School in 1960. He was a keen canoe paddler and coached the sport. He was also a weightlifter and avid golfer. A cowboy at heart, his passion was horseback riding and roping. He took pleasure in spending time at the ranch where his horses were boarded. Joe worked in the construction industry as a carpenter and as a business agent for the Hawaii Carpenter's Union and later on the Mason's Union and the Hawaii's Laborer's Union. He was an influential mentor to many young men guiding them on career paths and coaching sporting activities he was associated with. Joe was a vibrant man, the salt of the earth and a true keiki o ka 'aina. He will be sorely missed. Services: Celebration of Life, Jan. 27, Kailua Beach Park, starting at 8:30 a.m. Service: 9:30 a.m. followed by scattering of ashes. Lei and casual attire, Beach shorts okay. No flowers please.
