Charles D. "Charlie" Fox, III
CHARLES D. CHARLIE FOX III Charles D. "Charlie" Fox, III of Honolulu, Hawaii, died February 14, 2014, after a long illness. A Celebration of Life will be held at Kahala Nui, 4389 Malia Street, Honolulu, on Thursday, April 10 from 12 pm - 2 pm (Aloha Attire). Charlie graduated from the University of North Carolina and the University of Virginia Law School. He served in the Navy on active duty from 1951-1954, including combat in Korea, and was in the reserves from 1957-1977. He achieved the rank of Captain, USNR. Charlie practiced law in his hometown of Roanoke, Virginia from 1957-1998. He was a former General Counsel of the Association of Naval Aviation. Charlie served as a member of the Board of Trustees of the University of Virginia Law School Foundation from 1991-1998, and was appointed an honorary trustee. Charlie held an Honorary Doctor of Laws from Tusculum College and he was a longtime trustee of the Warren W. Hobbie Charitable Trust. Charlie and his wife of 62 years, Preston, started the Smithfield-Preston Foundation to support the Smithfield Plantation in Blacksburg, Virginia and they, along with others, helped to start the Lahainaluna High School Foundation. He was active in too many organizations to list, lending his expertise and enthusiasm to all. Charlie is survived by wife, Preston; sons, Charles D. "Skip" Fox IV (Beth) and Frank P. Fox; grandchildren, Quent, Elm, Anna and Sam; and brother, Carter V. Fox.
