Stanley Yukio Sakuma
STANLEY YUKIO SAKUMA Resident of Honolulu, HI and Menlo Park, CA Nov. 18, 1921-Mar. 21, 2014 Stanley Yukio Sakuma passed away peacefully at the age of 92 on Friday March 21, 2014 at the Menlo Park VA Skilled Nursing Facility. Stanley was born and raised in Makawao, Maui where he graduated from Maui High School and was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout and earned an extra three palms. He moved to Oahu where he joined the ILWU Local 142 and began working on the waterfront. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor he joined the 442nd RCT K Company and fought in Italy and France. After the war he returned to Oahu and continued working on the waterfront. Later, he moved to the SF Bay Area and continued his waterfront career with the ILWU Local 34. After nearly 50 years as a ship clerk, he retired to the Island of Hawaii. Throughout his life he enjoyed fishing, gardening, Tai Chi, being a Boy Scout leader, volunteering with his local Buddhist church, and traveling the world. He was a certified masseuse in the states of California and Hawaii. With his family, Stanley was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and a competitive Cribbage and Hanafuda player with a keen sense of humor. Stanley was generous, loving, helpful, honorable, disciplined, hard-working, and always well-prepared. He will be missed by all. Stanley is predeceased by first wife, Tamaye and second wife, Minne. He is survived by daughters Susan Sakuma (Wilfred) of San Francisco, Miye Goishi (Dara) of Berkeley and sons Dan Sakuma (Veronica) of Belmont and Craig Goishi (Natalie) of Glen Ellen.He is also survived by grandchildren Kazuo Hoffman, Kevin Sakuma, Colin and Grace Lim. The family of Stanley Sakuma wish to thank all of the doctors, nurses, and staff, at the various facilities where he recently lived, who made his time there comfortable. A funeral service for Stanley was held on Sunday, March 30, 2014 in California.
