Dr. Robert Day Kemble
4-23 DR. ROBERT DAY KEMBLEDR. ROBERT DAY KEMBLE Age 91, of Honolulu, HI, passed away peacefully at home on April 1, 2014. He is survived by his wife Lois Salter Kemble; his sister Jean A. Kemble; his children Dr. Stephen B. Kemble, Brian S. Kemble, David B. Kemble, Marcia J. Kemble, and Dr. Janet K. Onopa; grand- children Dr. Sarah Kemble- Verhoef, Dr. Anne S. Kemble, Dr. Ryder K. Onopa, and Alexander K. Onopa; and great granddaughter Gabrielle N. Verhoef. Dr. Kemble was born July 31, 1922 in Boston. He served in the U.S. Army-Air Force in WW II, and earned his B.A. at Harvard College and his M.D. at Tufts Medical School. He trained in psychiatry at the Boston Veterans Administration Hospital, and then moved to Hawaii in 1957. He took a position as director of the Women's Service at the Territorial Hospital, soon to become Hawaii State Hospital when Hawaii achieved statehood in 1959. After a few years at the hospital he started his private practice of psychiatry in Honolulu. He believed passionately in the value and dignity of every individual, regardless of social status or mental illness, and he had a career-long interest in treating the seriously mentally ill. Dr. Kemble also had a lifelong interest in narrow-gauge steam locomotives and antique cars, and he was a founding member of the Hawaiian Railway Society. Services will be private. No flowers, please. Donations in Dr. Kemble's memory may be sent to the Hawaiian Railway Society.
