DOROTHY WATRY UPHOUSE (97), of Honolulu, passed away May 5, 2014 at Hawaii Kai Retirement & Assisted Living. She was born in Worthington, Minnesota and raised on a farm where milk and vegetables were fresh. She graduated from Saint Mary's School of Nursing in Rochester as a registered nurse. She worked at the Mayo Clinic, and then was recruited to the Northern Illinois College of Optometry where she met her future husband, Dr. Sam Uphouse. They eventually moved to Hawaii in 1955 and opened Aloha Optical Company together, a successful business serving customers for 40 years. She is survived by daughter, Barbara Wong (Dennis), and grandchildren, Pomaikai and Scott, and step-grandchild, Adam (Chelsie), along with 3 step-grandchildren. She was pre-deceased by son, Dr. William Uphouse (Dr. Gwen Naguwa), and husband, Dr. Sam Uphouse. A big MAHALO to Hawaii Kai Retirement and Assisted Living's wonderful and caring staff! Also, a big MAHALO to Dr. Nina Hayashi, Dr. Albert Leung, Dr. Thomas Maeda and Dr. David Fujimoto. Your kindness will not be forgotten! Visitation is Friday, May 16, 2014 from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Borthwick Makai Chapel, with a service at 5:30 p.m. A private burial at Punchbowl will take place later.
