GORDON CHARLES NAKIPI ONTAI After a hard-fought battle against prostate cancer, Dr. Gordon Ontai, 79, passed away on April 21, 2014. Dr. Ontai was born on October 14, 1934 in Honolulu to Helen and Charles Ontai. Dr. Ontai dedicated his life to serving others through medicine. He served as a Lieutenant with the US Navy and worked at Kaiser Permanente as an obstetrician/gynecologist, before going into private practice. For more than 50 years, Dr. Ontai took care of his patients, delivering hundreds of babies for many three-generation families. He loved what he did and felt it was a privilege to share in one of the happiest days of his patients' lives -- the birth of their children. Dr. Ontai also gave back to the community, by donating his services for many years to Waimanalo Health Center, St. Francis Healthcare System and St. Anthony's Mary Jane Center -- a home for pregnant teens. He also set up an office in Waianae to serve patients on West Oahu, and is a past award recipient of the University of Hawaii Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Teaching Program. He finally retired in December 2013. Dr. Ontai is survived by his brother Allan (Patricia) Ontai and his children: Sidney (Stacey) Ontai; Lisa (Peter Stone) Ontai; Laurie (Terry) LaGrange; Eddie (Cindy) Ontai; and his stepson Laurence (Holly) Iwamoto. He also has 11 grandchildren, whom he loved dearly: Laurelin, Amy and Christopher Ontai; Jarret and Janelle Stone; Gavin and Christian LaGrange; and Daniel, Marlee, Raymee and Andrew Ontai. "Thank you dad for your love and dedication to helping others.
