MILDRED ASATO KIMMILDRED ASATO KIM March 2, 1923 - April 20, 2014 Celebrating the Life of Mildred Asato Kim, 91, who passed away on Easter Sunday, April 20, 2014. She was in the loving care of her caregivers Maria, Percy, Gabriel and Rose. She was given the utmost care in her elderly years. She was born on March 2, 1923 in Haiku, Maui to Yeikiyu Asato and Kana Chinen; Mildred was the fourth eldest of nine children. She attended Maui High School, Queen's Hospital School of Nursing and the University of Hawaii. In 1941, as a probationary student nurse at Queen's Hospital she would experience the realistic events during World War II. She would achieve her goal and graduate with a diploma from the School of Nursing at Queen's. By 1947 she became the head nurse and instructor at The Queen's Medical Center. She earned her bachelor's in nursing from the University of Hawaii in 1950. She married David Kim in 1954 in Honolulu, Hawaii. Thus began her many years as a working spouse, mother, daughter, sister, mentor and friend. She retired in 1977 as Director of Nursing at the Queen's Medical Center. She also worked as a consultant for the State Department of Health, and as a Nursing Supervisor at St. Francis Medical Center. Continuing her education, Mildred earned her Master's Degree in Public Health in 1980. She was a conscientious, dedicated, encouraging, loving and caring person that shared her values to everyone she came to know. Her most important events in her life were her educational experiences in the nursing field and giving back to the community with her many hours of service. She was a member of the Makiki Christian Church & Hawaii Kai United Church of Christ, The Queen's Auxiliary, and the Queen's School of Nursing Alumni Association. She loved gardening, traveling and visiting family and friends. She is survived by sons, Rev. Hollis (Sue) Kim, Tracy (Jan) Kim, Jeffrey (Dorian) Kim, sister Ruth Yoshiko Uyechi, seven grand children, one great-grand child, and many nieces and nephews. Her Celebration of life service will be held at 11:30 a.m., Monday June 16, 2014 at Diamond Head Mortuary Chapel 535 18th Ave, Honolulu, HI 96816; Family visitation to begin at 10:00 a.m., Public visitation at 10:30 a.m. Aloha attire.
