Bertha Leong LeeBERTHA LEONG LEE Age 86, of Honolulu, passed away on May 25, 2014. Born Dec. 30, 1927, Bertha was a graduate of Farrington High School & the University of Hawaii where she was a member of Yang Chung Hui sorority. Her parents William Kun Let Leong (a founding father of Tan Sing Dramatic Assn & former member of the Kuo Min Tang Society) & Mary Ngan Wong Leong instilled in her a deep love of Chinese culture, especially Chinese Opera. She attended Mun Lun Chinese Language School until the start of WW II. She also learned the Chinese Butterfly Harp, Sword, Fan and other dances from visiting Hong Kong opera troops & would perpetuate what she was taught at Chinese functions, school functions & local USO events both during & after WW II with her sister June. Bertha worked at Hickam Air Force Base as an Executive Secretary for the 1957th Communications Group where she won numerous awards for her work and when she retired in 1994, she was allowed to have her retirement ceremony on board the USS Arizona and awarded a flag flown over the memorial for her 41 years of federal civil service. She is survived by her son William Y.K. Lee, Sister June Loo (Edmund), & brother Wallace Leong. Visitation: 9:00 am Saturday Borthwick Mortuary. Service: 11:00 am. Casual attire.
