PATRICIA JENNINGS MORRISS CAMPBELL 87, of Waimea passed away May 30th, 2014 at her home after battling cancer. She was born at Pa'auhau Infirmary on August 24, 1926, the daughter of Willis and Marie Jennings, who at the time lived in Kukuihaele. Patricia spent her younger years living on sugar plantations on the Big Island and Maui where her father was a plantation manager. She was homeschooled by her mother, during which time she had the opportunity to act as guide and host to artist Georgia O'Keeffe during her 10 day stay in Hana, Maui in 1939, when Patricia was just 12 years old. One of Patricia's proudest achievements was the publication of "Georgia O'Keeffe's Hawaii", co-authored with Marie Ausherman. It eloquently depicts this influential encounter from her childhood. Patricia was a boarder at Punahou School on Dec. 7, 1941, and vividly recalled the chaos of the attack on Pearl Harbor, the military taking over her dormitory, and her family's risky evacuation to Maui on one of the first available flights out of Honolulu on Dec. 11. After graduating from Punahou in 1944 and one year at Pine Manor, Patricia married Alexander William "Bill" Morriss III, a navy "Hellcat" pilot. They moved to St. Louis, MO where they had 5 children and lived for 17 years before returning to Hawaii in 1961. After five years in Spreckelsville , Maui they moved to Waimea . By 1970, Patricia slipped into the commercial scene. She set up a part-time woolcraft business in the corner of Woody Wood's Waimea Village Inn and soon found herself managing and enlarging his sporting goods and gift shop. In 1976, when the Village Inn became the Village Campus for HPA, Patricia became full owner of the Waimea General Store and Waimea Woolcraft and it moved across the street to its current location at Parker Square. She was also quite active in the West Hawaii Players and the Waimea Community Players theater groups during the 1970's and 1980's. Eleven years after her husband Bill Morriss died, Patricia married Allan M. Campbell in 1989 and moved to Australia where she lived for 17 terrific years before returning to Waimea in 2006. Patricia spent her final years in Waimea enjoying knitting, reading, needlepointing, and listening to the sounds of her family playing bocce on the lawn, a sound she expressed filled her with joy. She was also a skilled backgammon player, and maintained a winning record against most, if not all, of her descendants. Perhaps her greatest joy was her 3 great-grandchildren. They would come visit her often on their own, seeking a special treat, a story, or just to bring her some handpicked flowers. She felt very fortunate. She is survived by her husband Allan Campbell of Australia; her five children; Sally (Allen) Wooddell, Virginia (Andrew Fisher) Pressler Fisher, Lex (Lisa) Morriss, Neil Morriss, Richard (DD) Morriss; thirteen grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Patricia was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006. She had an indomitable spirit and battled fiercely for 8 years. During this hard won time, she published her memoir of Georgia O'Keeffe, watched her great-grandchildren grow up, witnessed the marriage of grandson Alexander, and was surrounded by her family in Waimea. Friends may call at 10:00 a.m. Monday, June 23 at St. James Episcopal Church in Waimea for a 11:00 a.m. service. Casual attire is requested. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to North Hawaii Hospice, The Nature Conservancy's Michael Morriss Memorial Fund, or the A.W. Morriss III Scholarship Fund at HPA.
