HENRY "HOPPY" J. REIS, JR.
6-28 HENRY REIS, JR.HENRY HOPPY J. REIS, JR. Henry James "Hoppy" Reis, Jr. age 92, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 7, 2014 at Queen's Medical Center. Henry was born on November 18, 1921 in Honolulu, Hawaii to Henry and Adelaide Reis. He was a graduate of McKinley High School, class of 1941. Henry spent WWII as a Civilian Athletics Director with the Army Corps of Engineers. After the war he worked for the City & County of Honolulu, Department of Parks & Recreation, serving as a Playground Director, Gym & Playground Director, Camping Specialist, Administrative Assistant II and finally retiring as the Assistant Concession Contracts Officer after 30 years in 1977. Henry then took a position as the Assistant Athletic Director with the University of Hawaii Lab School until 1982 when he became the Equipment Manager at Iolani High School until his final retirement in 2002. Throughout his life Henry was always interested in sports and the mentoring of young athletes. Henry taught physical education, and coached numerous athletes in track, boxing, tennis, basketball, baseball, volleyball, football, life saving and swimming in the Honolulu recreational leagues. Henry was selected Pop Warner Football Coach of the Year by the Honolulu Quarterback's club for 1959. Henry was predeceased by his sister, Alvina Taylor, brother Fredrick Reis, his wife Gertrude Reis and his youngest daughter, Tammy Soares. Henry is survived by his son, James M. (Pat) Reis, daughter, Stephanie L. (Jim) Sheehy, son-in-law, Mark Soares, 5 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Visitation: 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Mililani Mortuary-Waipio, Makai Chapel. Service: 6:30 p.m. Burial: 10:00 a.m. Thursday. Aloha attire. Flowers welcome.
