Eleanor S. ("Ellie") Williston
7-13 644908 Eleanor WillistonELEANOR S. (ELLIE) WILLISTON Age 86, of Kailua, Oahu, passed away peacefully in San Diego, California on May 27 surrounded by her family. Ellie was born December 28, 1927 in Evanston, Illinois, the daughter of Katherine O. and Arthur Pearson Scott, a History Professor at the University of Chicago. Ellie attended the U. of Chicago Lab School, was a proud graduate of Barrington (Il.) High and earned an A.A. from the U. of Chicago. Accompanying her father on sabbatical to Yenching Univ. (Beijing) in 1948, Ellie taught English in China. In 1949, Ellie married Horace ("Willy") Williston and after she helped Willy earn his M.A. in Asian Studies from U.C. Berkeley by typing his thesis, Ellie's parents gave them a trip around the world. In 1952 Ellie moved with Willy and infant son Jim to Japan, where Willy was a U.S. Army intelligence analyst. In Japan, Jim was joined by sisters Kay and Mary. After enjoying nearly six years in Japan, the family was moved by the Army to Hawaii in 1958, settling in Kailua, which Ellie loved. Daughter B.J. joined the family in 1961. With children grown, Ellie became a real estate agent and broker with, among others, Huffman & Drake in Kailua. Ellie was a consummate volunteer with Windward United Church of Christ (WUCC)(thrift shop head for 20+ years and frequent altar flower arranger), Assistance League of Hawaii (thrift shop, keiki hearing testing and taking "zoo" to neighbor island schools), Friends of Kailua Library, Tutu Tutorial (reading with Kailua Elem. kids), and the American Association of University Women (AAUW) of Hawaii (Honolulu Chapter). She also was President of the Windward Flower Arrangers for several terms. Ellie loved to play bridge with friends at Kaneohe Yacht Club and St. Christopher's, work on the Wash. Post crossword, and watch "Jeopardy." Ellie was predeceased by her parents and Willy and is survived by her beloved sister Barbara Huszagh of Wheaton, Il; children James (Jim) Williston (Honolulu), Katherine (Kay) Streeter (David)(Juneau, AK), Mary Davis (John)(Mount Vernon, WA), and Jean (B.J.) Williston (Michael Gaughan)(San Diego, CA); and grandchildren David K. Holmes and Kally and Kellen Gaughan. Celebration of life and scattering of ashes in December. Memorial donations may be made to WUCC, Friends of Kailua Library, Assistance League of Hawaii or AAUW of Hawaii. Ellie's children extend their deepest appreciation to those friends, family and community members who visited and sent cards and well wishes to Ellie in her final months.
