Thalia Batta Word
THALIA BATTA WORD May 15, 2014 Thalia Batta Hettema Word, passed away on May 15, 2014. She was born August 22, 1920 in Rochester, New York and traveled to Honolulu at age two. She grew up in Honolulu and Hilo and graduated from Roosevelt High School, class of '38. After the December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, she rolled bandages with other volunteers and worked as a supply clerk at Hickam AAFB during the war. She met her husband during the war and they were married in Lima, Peru, during his assignment there as Marine attache'. Follow on assignments were to MCAS Ewa, Santa Ana, CA, Norfolk, VA, and MCAS Kaneohe. In 1955, the family moved into their longtime home located at Wilikoki Place, Kailua. She worked at Kailua High School as a substitute teacher and secretary. After retiring, she enjoyed a quiet life at home and spent time with her grand- children and great grand children, plants, flowers and her cat. She was preceded in death by brothers Oscar and Myron (Mike) and sister Tress, her husband of 43 years, LtCol William E. Word, USMC Ret. and son, Chief Petty Officer John Wallace Word, USN Ret. She is survived by her children Kenneth, Leslie, Ross, Sydney, and John's wife Jonelle, 13 grandchildren and 18 Great Grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation, Thursday, July 17, 2014 at the Windward United Church of Christ, 12 noon to 1 p.m., services at 1 p.m. Private scattering of ashes at Kalama Beach on Saturday, July 19, 2014.
