GEORGE B. PETHEL Ventura, California George B. Pethtel passed away peacefully on July 22, 2013 at Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura, CA. George was born on September 19, 1925 in Pleasants County, WV to Allen and Grace Pethtel. At 17, his parents signed for him to enlist in the Navy. He went to Ordinance and Aerial Gunnery schools, and then reported to CASO 33 at the Naval Air Station in Los Alamitos, Calif. His unit, ACORN 19 was initially deployed in the Solomon Islands. He later saw action in Mindora and Samar, Philippine Islands. After WWII, George returned home to New Mexico and worked as a roustabout in the oil fields. He moved to Southern California in 1947 and worked for Chevron until he retired after 38 years. George was preceded in death by wife of 49 years, Mary LaVerne, son George Warren, daughter Denise Russell and sister, Evelyn Frame. George is survived by his wife, Viola, daughter, Jo Anna Teel, nephew, Richard B. Goodner, 2 grandchildren, and 5 great- grandchildren. George will be interred in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (Punchbowl) Honolulu, Hawaii. Memorial services will be held Tuesday July 22, 2014 at 10:30 AM.
