10-10,-10-11-MARY-RICE-KING-0000678056-01MARY RICE KING Mary Rice King first met her husband, Garfield, during WWII at her brother "Oskie's" house in Makawao where he entertained officers from NAS Maui in Puunene to relieve their tension awaiting battle. Mary and Gar married after the war and lived in his hometown of Chicago, Ill, moving back to Hawaii in 1959. The daughter of Harold Waterhouse Rice of Kauai and Charlotte McKinney Baldwin of Maui, Mary grew up on Kaonoulu Ranch on Maui and passed away peacefully at home in the early morning of September 22, 2014. Gar predeceased Mary as did her brother, Harold F. "Oskie" Rice and sisters Charlotte Emily "Chimey" Dayton and Maud R. Milne. She is survived by daughter Sheila Hixon of New York and sons Charlie of Kauai and Bill "BK" of Maui. Mary's love of animals, particularly dogs, led her to be a founding benefactor of Hawaii Canines for Independence, now known statewide as Assistance Dogs of Hawaii. Memorial gifts may be made to either Assistance Dogs of Hawaii, Kapiolani Hospital Foundation or Hospice Maui. Services will be graveside at Makawao Cemetery Saturday October 11th at 3PM.
