JAMES HUNT FLEMING
JAMES HUNT FLEMING James Hunt Fleming, 81, of Kailua passed away peacefully on September 17, 2014. Jim and his wife Joan Wood Fleming, had just marked their 59th wedding anniversary. Part of a well-known Maui family, Jim was the son of Dr. Jim and Betty Fleming. Jim graduated from Stanford University with BS and MS degrees in Electrical Engineering and Business, and later a certificate in Advanced Management from Harvard University. He was employed at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and received a Superior Accomplishment Award from the Shipyard in both 1982 and 1984. He retired after 27 years at the Shipyard in 1988 as Head Engineer for the Nuclear Engineering Division. In retirement, he parlayed his career refueling nuclear submarines into volunteer work at Hawaii Institute for Marine Biology at Coconut Island, where he served as engineering handy man, flume specialist, and pump expert. When not working with the researchers and students on their projects, he volunteered with other non-profits, raised orchids, and enjoyed sailing his sailboat on Kaneohe Bay and to the neighbor islands. He joined the Honolulu Wood Turners and made beautiful bowls from local hardwoods. Jim and Joan raised four children in Kailua: David (Bridget), Leslie (Kevin Wilcock), Marcy (Robert Wheeler) and Bruce (Shelley), and have five grandchildren, all of whom have wonderful memories of their times together. Jim's extended family spans the Pacific and includes twin brother Jack in Poulsbo, WA, twin brothers Ward (deceased), and Wray in Cameron Park, CA, as well as the many neighbors, colleagues, students, artisans, woodcrafters, researchers, and friends whom he met along the way. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Friends of DT Fleming Arboretum at Puu Mahoe, PO Box 101, Makawao, HI 96768 or the Nature Conservancy in support of their Hawaii Reef Revival project and Marine Conservation. A Celebration of his life has been RE-SCHEDULED for 4 pm Dec 23 (new date) at Kaneohe Yacht Club. Casual attire.
Our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased
