MELVIN MASAHARU WATANABE 72, retired major, U.S. Army, died in Chicago on Dec. 10. He was born in Honolulu. A graduate of Mid-Pacific Institute and the University of Hawaii, he spent 20 years in active military service. On retirement, he taught in the JROTC high school program in Chicago. He is survived by wife Martha, of Libertyville, Ill.; sons Wesley of Quincy, Ill. and Wendell (Amy) of Kenosha, Wi.; daughter Joy Lawson (Dave) of Brea, Ca.; brother Jerry (Kathleen) of Las Vegas, Nv.; sister Charlotte (Kenneth) Isa of Kaneohe; and two grandchildren. Committal service and interment: 11:30 a.m., Jan. 30, at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Punchbowl.
