NORA PATRICIA PATTY CHILD Nora Patricia "Patty" (Hall) Child passed away peacefully in hospice care, in the company of her daughter on December 4, 2014 in Honolulu. She was 90. Born in Seattle, WA, Patty was the eldest of five children and grew up in Washington, Arizona and New Mexico. After graduating from high school in Lordsburg, New Mexico, Patty joined the FBI as a secretary in Phoenix, Arizona in 1943. A subsequent assignment to the Seattle office led her straight into the arms of the love of her life, Harold L. "Bill" Child, who made it his greatest priority to win her over. They married in Honolulu in August of 1947 and moved to Wahiawa several years later. In 1954, with their two young sons in tow, they were transferred to Tokyo, Japan where Bill was assigned to the Legal Attache at the American Embassy. Patty balanced a part-time job as social secretary to the wives of U.S. ambassadors Reischauer and Johnson with active participation in the Tokyo Round Table Club and other organizations fostering friendship between American and Japanese women. She took classes at Sophia University, learned to speak conversational Japanese, and loved traveling throughout the Far East with friends and family. When Bill retired from the FBI and began a second career back in Honolulu, Patty embraced this new chapter of their lives, staying active by playing golf, bridge, and especially tennis, at which she was a formidable opponent. She was also an avid reader. She enjoyed memorable travels to the Far East and Southeast Asia accompanying Bill on his consulting trips, as well as visiting family on the mainland. In 2005, they moved from their house to Kahala Nui, where they were able to enjoy a simpler, carefree lifestyle and social activities. She loved her lifestyle and her friendships in Hawaii -- often reminding her family, "Lucky we live Hawaii!" She will always be remembered for her wonderful sense of humor, her love and devotion for her Bill, and her unending love for all her family. Patty is survived by her daughter Lynne and her husband Carl Franceschi of Needham, MA, her brother James Hall of Oklahoma City, OK, her daughter-in-law Sandra Child of Chapel Hill, NC, her eight grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Bill, her sons, Michael and John, and her sisters, Mary Lynch, Donna Holcomb and Caroline Hall. A family gathering in her memory will take place later this year in Honolulu.
