STANLEY W. HONG Stanley W. Hong, a leader in Hawaii's business, civic and philanthropic communities for more than four decades, died Friday in Honolulu at the age of 78 from cancer. He leaves behind his wife, Karen; his sons, David and Jonathan, both of New York; four grandsons; his mother, Rosalie Moilee Hong, who is 102 years old; and his four siblings, all of Honolulu, brothers Michael and Stephen and sisters Laurie Wong and Tina Leong. Stanley was born on April 5, 1936 in Honolulu to the late Gilbert Hong, a dentist, and mother Rosalie, a homemaker. The eldest of five, he grew up in a large, loving family and attended St. Louis School, followed by Oregon State and Drake University Law School. Stanley enjoyed a long career filled with high-profile business and civic activity, which touched many communities of Hawaii. He was a trustee and past chair of the King William Charles Lunalilo Trust Estate and the Executive Director of the Aloha Medical Mission. Notably, he served as president and chief executive officer of both the Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii and the Hawaii Visitors Bureau. He also held key executive roles with Theo H. Davies and Jardine Matheson, and with Waste Management of Hawaii. He served on numerous corporate boards including Central Pacific Bank, First Insurance Company of Hawaii, Bishop Trust, Lanihau Properties, and Kerr-Pacific Corp. Stanley was deeply committed to serving the community and supporting many causes, some of which included St. Louis School, the Nature Conservancy of Hawai'i, Child and Family Service, the East-West Center Foundation and St. Francis Healthcare. However, Stanley will be remembered most of all for a personality "larger than life" - gregarious and warm-hearted, with a natural ability to put people at ease. With an easy smile and a welcoming voice, Stanley was always the first to call a friend in need, offer a congratulations or celebrate a special day. He treated his roles as father, husband, son, brother, grandfather and friend with the utmost of importance and had an extraordinarily positive outlook on life. His absence will be forever felt. Mass will be celebrated at St. Pius X Parish, 2821 Lowrey Ave. in Manoa, at 10:00am, on Friday, February 20th, followed by private inurnment. The family will be receiving guests an hour prior to and following the mass.
